Is there a limit on the number of fans who can attend The Open?

Modified on Thu, 26 Jun at 2:33 PM

While The R&A strives to ensure as many fans as possible can attend The Open, we do not want to put fans at risk or make the experience lesser due to overcrowding in, or around the championship. Therefore, there is a maximum number of fans who can attend each day of The Open.

For The 153rd Open we anticipate there will be a record 278,000 fans in attendance, up from 237,750 in 2019.

This number changes at each venue due to a variety of factors such as:

  • Space around the golf course for infrastructure
  • Health & safety factors
  • Transport / travel network logistics
  • The availability of accommodation
  • Agreements with local authorities
  • Other factors that would impact the overall spectator experience
